Silicon Valley startup Lightmatter just announced its most ambitious release yet: the Passage M1000, a 3D photonic interposer that promises to upend the way AI chips talk to one another.
Instead of relying on traditional electrical connections (which are fast reaching their physical limits), Lightmatter is using light to connect chips.
The result is an optical bandwidth that blows past existing interconnects.

Passage M1000 delivers a staggering 114 Tbps of optical bandwidth.
The 3D platform enables the largest die complexes to date, connecting thousands of GPUs in a single domain.
It’s powered by 256 optical fibers, offering 448 Gbps per fiber, an order of magnitude above Co-Packaged Optics.
Built with GlobalFoundries’ Fotonix silicon photonics platform and co-developed with Amkor, it’s optimized for AI-scale deployments.
Lightmatter’s M1000 goes beyond speed. It removes long-standing limitations like edge-only I/O by enabling electro-optical access across the full chip surface. In plain terms: data no longer has to funnel through narrow bottlenecks; now it can fly in and out wherever it needs to.
As AI workloads are exploding in size, bandwidth between chips becomes a struggle. Lightmatter’s Passage platform attacks that issue head-on by enabling seamless interconnectivity for thousands of GPUs. Their 3D stacked architecture also unlocks a new dimension of scalability in chip design.
The company also introduced a new “chiplet” designed to sit on top of AI chips, set to launch in 2026. Combined, the interposer and chiplet aim to make Lightmatter’s platform the connective tissue for a new generation of photonics-powered infrastructure.
