$1.1 Billion in Art Sold in Less Than Three Hours
A single evening only brought in $1 billion at auction one other time, Paul Allen’s estate in 2022.
Christie’s May 18 evening sale was headlined by:
Pollock: $181.2M, nearly 3x his previous record
Brancusi: $107.6M, second highest sculpture price ever
Rothko: $98.4M, a new record for the artist
Obvious outliers, but the evening capped a spring auction season that totaled $2.5 billion (roughly 2x last year). This follows a Q1’26 that saw the postwar contemporary art market grow 23.1%.
Masterworks offers investors the opportunity to invest in blue-chip contemporary and post-war art. Since 2017, it has offered over 500 artworks and raised over $1 billion in total investments.
29 exits to-date have delivered net annualized returns like 16.5%, 17.6% and 17.8% on sold works held over 12 months.

Sunday's AI news landed on three themes at once: frontier model capability, chip supply-chain policy, and a new front in domestic AI regulation. Anthropic pushed Opus 4.8 out the door in record time and confirmed its most powerful model yet — Mythos — is nearly ready for everyone. Meanwhile Washington moved to close a year-old loophole that let advanced Nvidia chips reach Chinese-affiliated companies abroad, and Illinois quietly passed the strictest AI safety law in U.S. history.

Anthropic Ships Claude Opus 4.8, Confirms Mythos Is Coming to All CustomersAnthropic launched Claude Opus 4.8 on May 28 — just 41 days after Opus 4.7, its fastest flagship update cycle to date. The model is 4x more accurate at detecting code flaws, ships with a 2.5x-faster "Fast Mode" at 3x lower cost, and introduces Dynamic Workflows, which lets Claude Code spin up hundreds of parallel subagents to handle codebase-scale migrations autonomously. More consequentially, Anthropic confirmed that Mythos-class models — previously restricted to a coalition of AWS, Apple, Microsoft, and Google over cybersecurity concerns — will be available to all customers "in the coming weeks."

OpenAI's latest reasoning-focused model reportedly produced a valid proof for a longstanding combinatorics problem that had resisted solution since the mid-20th century. Independent mathematicians reviewed the AI-generated argument and confirmed it appears mathematically sound. The model reached the result by working step-by-step through candidate approaches, discarding failed paths, and constructing a novel logical argument — a process researchers say mirrors how human mathematicians tackle open problems.

The Commerce Department issued surprise Sunday guidance requiring export licenses for advanced AI chips — including Nvidia's Rubin and Blackwell processors and AMD's MI350x — shipped to entities headquartered in China, even when those entities operate outside the country. The move closes a gap created in May 2025 when the Trump administration declined to enforce the Biden-era AI Diffusion Rule. One supply-chain source estimated that hundreds of thousands of chips may have reached Chinese-affiliated overseas subsidiaries during that window.
Source →Illinois Passes America's Strongest AI Safety Law — And OpenAI and Anthropic Support It
The Illinois legislature passed SB 315, requiring independent third-party safety audits for frontier AI models, mandatory public safety plans, annual testing reports, and 72-hour incident disclosure windows. Governor Pritzker confirmed he intends to sign it. In an unusual turn, both OpenAI and Anthropic publicly backed the bill — a strategic move analysts interpret as an effort to lock in uniform, manageable standards before a patchwork of diverging state laws emerges. The law takes effect January 1, 2027.

Enterprise AI governance startup Geordie AI closed a $30 million Series A led by Balderton Capital, with participation from General Catalyst, Ten Eleven Ventures, and Crosspoint Capital. The company builds a security and governance platform that gives enterprises visibility into, and control over, autonomous AI agents operating across internal systems. Geordie AI won the 2026 RSAC Innovation Sandbox competition earlier this year, reflecting the surge in demand for agent oversight tooling as agentic deployments scale.
